Through research, documentation, media work, and policy advocacy, American Friends Service Committee – Arizona (AFSC-AZ) challenges criminalization, opposes prison expansion, and advocates for policy change to reduce the size and scope of the criminal punishment system, which encompasses not just physical places of incarceration, but also the proliferation of systems of control, surveillance, and supervision.

PLN has published continuously since 1990 and covers a wide range of topics that include prison labor, rape and sexual abuse, misconduct by prison and jail staff, prisoners’ constitutional rights, racial and socioeconomic disparities in our criminal justice system, medical and mental health care for prisoners, disenfranchisement, rehabilitation and recidivism, prison privatization, prison and jail phone rates, women prisoners, the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA), prison censorship, the death penalty, HIV and hep C, solitary confinement and control units, and much more.

Abolish Private Prisons is a 501c(3) Arizona Non-Profit Corporation that was incorporated on June 10, 2015. The organization was founded by a group of lawyers, professors, and community advocates with a simple purpose – to end for profit private prisons in the United States.

We believe that the only way to truly end for-profit prisons in the United States is to challenge the constitutionality of private for-profit prisons in the courts. Other forms of advocacy are very important but they are not enough. We need the United States Supreme Court to declare it the law of the land that private prisons are unconstitutional and must be abolished. Our legal team and Executive Director collectively have # years of legal expertise and will provide the leadership necessary for this type of legal case.

While the legal team prepares for the upcoming case the rest of the organization is dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public about the negative impact that private for-profit prisons have on society.

This website is meant to be a resource for everyone to learn about the private for-profit prison industry and to open up opportunities for you to participate in the work of Abolish Private Prisons.
