Prison Policy Initiative (PPI), published the above article (find it here) and found an astonishing number of women and girls—almost ONE MILLION—- were either incarcerated, on probation, or on parole last year.

Women have a mortality rate significantly higher than men held in prison, and twice as high for deaths due to drug or alcohol intoxication. The incarceration rate for women has increased at twice the rate for men in the last decade. Data reported that 76% of women had indications of current or previous mental health problems.
