Infrastructure Nightmares
Introduction to this Topic by the Editor
I need to give you a little background on Perryville so this will be more understandable. This prison was built in the early
Explaining the Shower Picture
This is an accurate sketch of a real shower in “B” yard, Santa Cruz unit. Do you see the loose wires hanging in the lower door jamb? I was told they were “live” because this shower light is still on. I won’t test this theory! I’ve tried to portray all the standing water in front of those wires. All the shower units have standing water because the drains are all plugged.
Standing water = black mold we see everywhere
When inmates complained about the condition of this shower, they just took off the door and left it open. In the shower next to this one (not pictured) is the same filth.
The regulators (hot and cold) will not engage so moving the handle from Hot to Cold does nothing. The temperature the DOC sets is what you get. In the winter the water is cold and in the summer, it’s hot. The water pressure would increase dramatically if they would soak the shower heads in Lime-aWay to remove 50 years of accumulated minerals.
Only One Plumber?
Only one plumber in P’ville holds up all shower restoration!
Here we go again. Our high-placed source, explains why the women in all medium units are functioning with only a few scarce showers.
This overdue, and very necessary demolition/restoration, of the 60-year-old showers, has been slow-walked since its inception. We finally discovered the alleged culprit….. the plumber. Reportedly, he rarely does his job, and yet refuses to loan out his tools to speed things up.
This project is fully funded. Why would the DOC only hire one plumber?
Why my best friends are CNN news anchors
I am a prisoner at Perryville. Arizona Department of Corrections is infamous for its nonexistent mental health care. The women live in a dark place, isolated and alone, which is only exacerbated by Covid restrictions.
Recently, I was transferred to the Lumley unit, which is guaranteed to make a sane person go nuts. The Deputy Warden of this unit believes in punitive justice, not restorative justice. As soon as he was installed, he demanded all his women be escorted everywhere they needed to go.
Imagine being through with your medical appointment in 20 minutes, or shopping that takes 5 minutes, and waiting in triple-digit heat 2 HOURS for an ‘escort’ home. Crippling short-staffing makes this draconian rule difficult for inmates and guards alike. It takes away what little sense of autonomy a person has.
We are not allowed to mingle or visit with anyone but the people on our own yard. What if your BF is on ‘D’ yard, and you’re on ‘A’ yard? You are S.O.L. Even if that’s the one person that can talk you off the ledge, you won’t ever see them. So you turn to the DOC ‘mental health professional’. And after pouring your heart out, they pat you on the head and hand you a coloring book. Wouldn’t your dark place get darker?
So for sanity, I watch CNN. These are congenial, intelligent, people you’ve gotten to know during your long confinement. They seem like real friends. At least they talk to you. They seem caring. You know when they’ll laugh or cry at a story. You’ve seen pictures of their kids. And they are always THERE when you need them…..at the press of a button. A real psychologist would have a diagnosis for the poor sap that feels that way. But for the inmate on Lumley, they’ll never see a real psychologist. This is their dark reality.
A Few Short Stories
*Unsafe at any speed* We wonder if the D.O.T. knows that Perryville routinely jams 17 to 32 women in a 9 person van??? Our women have been jammed into vans going to medical, and the entire workforce of TeleVerde into one van. Can you spell C-O-V-I-D super spreader???!!! Can you imagine the injuries in a crash???!!
Staff Member: “Why does Perryville put the elderly and the pregnant upstairs where they could fall?” You’re asking US??? Here’s the same obvious answer….Because they’re STUPID!
Perryville RN: “Women having vitamin and iron deficiencies are skyrocketing!” The ladies themselves have reported this, but nice to have it confirmed by medical staff. Speaking of staff….they have found our site, and are singing like canaries in the coal mine:)
One of the top 5 complaints at Peaville: No response from staff on tablet or paper. This complaint by the women is growing louder. With the advent of tablets, they thought inmate letters would have a more rapid response from staff. It seems the opposite. The women have been put on ‘ignore’.
TALIBAN BENDEL!
Women can not move unless escorted* DW Bendel, of Lumley Unit, who is the only DW in Perryville that escorts medium inmates everywhere. A Mom of a daughter there called in this title. We wish we’d thought of it. So….what next for Bendel? Burka’s????
