Unsafe At Any Speed: DOC Transporting Patients Without Safety Restraints

Unsafe At Any Speed: DOC Transporting Patients Without Safety Restraints

(This recent story was told by the woman transported in the wheelchair compartment of the ADA van.)

“I’m the lady with the broken femur that posted my story earlier in the month. I’m supposed to be getting PT for my leg that was snapped in two, on a regular basis, but it’s irregular at best.

On 7-26-23 Transport officers Cheatham and Castillo were on duty driving the wheelchair-accessible van. Out of the 3 vans like this only one is working…..and it doesn’t work well. That day, three women were going to physical therapy…. me, one from Lumley, and one from Cruz. I was in the wheelchair box.

There are three lights, but only one works so it’s a dark trip wherever you go. No windows. We complained about no air conditioning, so Castillo climbed in to check the vent. She said, ” Well, with my hand right under the vent I feel air.” It felt like a furnace to us.

I can’t believe the Department of Transportation would decide it’s legal and safe to leave three women without seat belts. The officers put the two girls going with me in the back of the van. There are NO SEATS OR SEAT BELTS back there! There is a metal step that was not intended for passengers and has no restraints whatsoever.

If there was a roll over, I’d be flying out of my wheelchair as I’m not strapped in…only the wheelchair is. The two ladies in the back would be flipping over in a metal blender.

Remember, we are chained completely with no ability to break our fall or protect our head in a crash. We’d be toast. So in addition to posting this on a blog, I had my family forward it to the DOT.”

When CO LUCID Is Bay Officer Women Must DEHYDRATE Themselves So They Don’t Get A Ticket!

When CO LUCID Is Bay Officer Women Must DEHYDRATE Themselves So They Don’t Get A Ticket!

We have an eyewitness on A bay in San Carlos that has made records of CO Lucid’s denial of bathroom breaks during count. Here they are:

  • 6-29 11:43 to ? no announcement of count cleared at 12:11pm
  • 7-12 10:40 to 11:53
  • 7-24 10:45 to Noon

This officer makes the elderly and infirm wait an HOUR and HALF without going to the restroom. This is draconian, evil, and cruel. It’s even worse during a KILLER HEAT WAVE when all the experts, and even the DOC itself encourages drinking lots of water.

Here’s a direct quote from a 74-year-old, “When Lucid is bay officer I automatically stop drinking water about 9:30am, in order to make it through count without wetting myself. All the other officers let you use the bathroom after about 40 minutes into count. We are counted usually within the first 20 minutes, so we’re not disrupting anything. I understand they don’t want you going to the laundry or microwave room during count, but women over 65+ need to visit the restroom more often than a youngster. I get really THIRSTY waiting for count to clear…it’s cruel.”

Provider Malcolm to Patient: “You’re a junkie and drug addict, that’s where all your problems are.”

Provider Malcolm to Patient: “You’re a junkie and drug addict, that’s where all your problems are.”

(As we always say….this individual has her 1st Amendment right to free speech. There were no other witnesses to this medical appointment-Ed.)

“I had 2 strokes in county jail prior to Perryville. After the 2nd stroke, I started to have seizures. I had two seizures in R and A, but I don’t think the guard recorded them because I never went to medical.

At San Carlos, I verbally told Provider Malcolm my history. She said she couldn’t access my county records, ” Therefore, you’ll have to have a seizure here before I put you on medicine or give a chrono.” That’s when she said, “You’re a junkie and drug addict, that’s where all your problems are.”.

I told her my strokes were a result of family genetics and high blood pressure. This was a weird comment she made, ” You have high cholesterol because you’re white.” Then I told her it wasn’t safe for me to work in Complex Kitchen because of my seizures, and she said, “If I had a dollar for every excuse I heard from an inmate I’d be rich. My superiors have told me no chronos for anyone in complex kitchen because you all make up excuses.”

(This website hopes this story is an anomaly and not indicative of Carlos’ new provider.)
